The Dordt Defender men's basketball team was on the wrong end of a late 11-0 run and lost a 70-66 decision to Dakota Wesleyan on the road Wednesday night, January 25 in Mitchell, South Dakota.
Dordt led much of the first half and was up 33-29 at halftime. The Tigers scored the first four points of the second half to lead briefly but Dordt got a bucket and the two teams began a back and forth affair that featured eight ties, the last at 59-59 when
Lucas Lorenzen scored a bucket for Dordt and then added a free throw. After a defensive stop Dordt's
Jacob Vis got a bucket and was fouled with 3:32 left in the game and his free throw put Dordt up 63-59.
The Defenders appeared to get another stop by Diang Gatluak got free for a putback to cut the lead in half and a Dordt turnover gave Wesleyan a shot to tie and they did with 2:27 left in the game. After a Dordt miss the Tigers got a three-point shot to go and the teams exchanged scoreless possessions. The Defenders turned it over with less than a minute left and Kallan Herman's second three in the run sealed the win with :19 left in the game for a 69-63 lead. Wesleyan added a free throw and
Cade Bleeker's late three-point shot made the final 70-66.
THE NUMBERS
- Dordt was 23-58 from the field for 40 percent and 5-20 from the three-point line.
- Dakota Wesleyan was 28-66 and 12-33 from the arc for 42 and 36 percent respectively.
- Dordt had a slight 39-38 rebounding edge and forced 12 turnovers while giving the ball up 13 times.
- Jacob Vis had 24 points and seven rebounds with two blocked shots and Bryce Coppock scored 19 with four rebounds.
- Lucas Lorenzen scored seven had had six rebounds and Luke Rankin had five assists.
- Dordt is now 16-5 overall and 8-5 in the league while Dakota Wesleyan is 11-10 and 7-6. The two teams split the regular season series this year.
- Dordt will travel to Hastings on Saturday, January 28.
