Dordt defeats Mayville State 81-68
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defender women's basketball team secured a win over no. 22 ranked Mayville State by an 81-68 margin on Saturday morning in Orange City.
Dordt overcame an early 5-1 deficit t build an 11-5 leach with 4:29 left in the first quarter with
Janie Schoonhoven getting a pair of buckets,
Bailey Beckman one and
Karly Gustafson four points. Mayville State responded with a seven-point run for a brief 12-11 and the Comets were up 20-19 early in the second period when Dordt exerted control.
An 8-0 run ended with a
Bailey Beckman basket and Dordt's first double digit lead came on another Beckman basket, this one a three-pointer for a 36-24 edge. The lead was still nine at halftime with Dordt holding a 43-34 edge. Dordt's lead ballooned to 18 twice in the third period, the last time at 61-43 with
Karly Gustafson getting a basket close to the hoop. Dordt's lead was as many as 28 after a Heimensen basket with 5:20 left in the game and Mayville State scored 14 of the last 15 points to trim the difference to an 81-68 final.

- Dordt was 32-65 from the field and 7-17 from the arc and made 10-15 free throws.
- Mayville State was 21-56 from the field and 11-33 from the three-point line and converted 15-19 free throws.
- Dordt had a 50-23 rebounding edge.
- Karly Gustafson scored 25 points and had eight rebounds.

- Bailey Beckman scored 20 and had six rebounds and converted four three-point shots.
- Jess Mertens led Mayville State with 12 points and five rebounds.
- Jordan Zrust and Mackenzie Hughes each had 11 points.
- Dordt is now 5-1 this season while Mayville State goes to 4-1.
