The Dordt University men's soccer team had its season come to an end with a 4-3 (2 OT) loss to Northwestern in the semifinals of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) postseason tournament.
The Defenders end their season with a 9-7-4 record and lose on the road in the GPAC semifinals for the second consecutive season. Northwestern improves to 14-4-2 on the year and advances to play Morningside for the GPAC Championship.
A back and forth match for the full 110 minutes of play, Dordt broke a 2-2 tie on a goal by
Jacob Narkis off a corner kick from
Robin Grewohl during the 75th minute. Northwestern, however, was quick to claim back the momentum when Stan van den Beld netted the game-tying goal at the 80th minute which sent the match into overtime.
In the first extra period, Northwestern scored the game-winner off a well-executed corner kick by van den Beld that Kobi Baccam headed into the far right side of the goal.
The Defenders totaled 12 shots and put nine on net; Northwestern accounted for 17 total shots and 12 on-goal.
Dordt goalkeeper
Mitchell Dryden made seven saves; Pablo Aspas, the Red Raider goalie, stopped five shots.
The host Red Raiders scored first as Tim Kaltenberger found the back of the net off an assist by van den Beld. Dordt responded with its first goal, during the 36th minute, when
Blake Hansen tucked a shot into the back of the net for his ninth goal of the season.
Tied 1-1 at the half, Dordt took its first lead after a successful corner kick by Grewohl found its way into the back of the net with only four minutes gone by in the second period. Northwestern tied the score once again, with a goal by Gerrard Uamai, at the 62nd minute.
