Dordt defeats IU Northwest 86-79
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defender women's basketball team won its third game of the week with an 86-79 win over the IU Northwest Red Hawks in a game hosted by Trinity Christian in Palos Heights, Illinois.
The Defenders used a fast start to take a 28-9 lead after the first quarter. In that period Dordt forced five turnovers and knocked down four three-point baskets. The Defenders were still up 34-19 after a
Janie Schoonhoven basket but went the next four minutes without a scored and allowed a 13-0 run.
Faith Van Holland's three point shot ended the dry spell with 2:12 left and
Bailey Beckman and
Macy Sievers added a three and a two to extend the lead to 42-32 and Van Holland added another as Dordt managed to take a 44-36 lead into the break.
Dordt's lead was never less than seven in the third quarter and the Defender led 64-55 going into the final quarter. The first six minutes of the final stanza were played with Dordt leading by anywhere from eight to 13 points but the Red Hawks made a final push. A free throw narrowed the gap to 78-71 and the lead was still seven at the 2:30 mark when IU Northwest got a layup, forced a turnover and converted a three-point basket to get within 80-76. Beckman re-established order with a basket at the 1:40 mark and Dordt's lead was never less than six the rest of the game.
THE NUMBERS
- Dordt was 31-75 from the field and 9-25 from the three-point line while converting 15-20 free throws.
- IU Northwest made 28-61 field goals and was 25-48 in the final three quarters. The Red Hawks also made 5-15 three-point shots and 18-23 free throws.
- Dordt had a 53-28 rebounding advantage but had 14 turnovers to 10 for IU Northwest.
- Dordt is 3-0 while IU Northwest is 1-2.

Dordt will face the University of Saint Mary (Kansas) on Friday at 1:00 in Orange City, Iowa and will play Mayville State (North Dakota) on Saturday also in Orange City.
