South Dakota State University Hands Defender Women Their First Loss

FINAL

South Dakota State University def. Dordt 66-54

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Dordt Defender women's basketball team lost a 66-54 decision on the road at South Dakota State University on Tuesday, December 12 in a game played at Frost Arena in Brookings, South Dakota.

The Defenders had a 10 point lead early in the second half but the hosts tightened the defense and made life difficult for Dordt in the final 15 minutes to secure the double-digit win.

Dordt led briefly in the first quarter at 11-9 after a Hayden Heimensen three-point basket and again at 13-11 on a Janie Schoonhoven basket with 3:11 left in the period. A Faith Van Holland three-point shot pushed Dordt up 16-15 but the hosts had an answer to go up 18-16 and led 20-17 after one quarter.

The Defenders went on a 10-0 run in the second quarter to go from down 26-23 to up 33-26 with Hayden Heimensen's layup punctuating the run at the 5:27 mark. South Dakota State answered with a five-point run only to have the Defenders score the final seven points of the half, the last three on a Hayden Heimensen steal that led to a buzzer beater three-point basket.

Dordt pushed the lead to 10 in the second half after a Macy Sievers basket in the paint for a 47-37 lead at the 7:14 mark but the offense became hard to come by after that. An 11-0 run led to a 53-48 advantage for the hosts and Beckman stopped the run with a jumper at the 1:57 mark and the score was 56-50 at the end of the quarter.

A Beckman three-point basket started the scoring in the fourth quarter but nearly four minutes went by before either team scored again and South Dakota State got that basket to go up five and a Beckman free throw at the 4:50 mark got the difference to 58-54. The hosts finished the game on an 8-0 run to secure their sixth win of the season.
