Hastings defeats Dordt 80-78
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defenders trailed much of the game and rallied from a 10-point second half deficit to lead late in the game but were unable to hang on and fell to Hastings 80-78 in GPAC action the De Witt Gym on Saturday, December 9.
Dordt's only lead of the first half was a 2-0 advantage and the Defenders were down 39-37 after
Jake Hargens knocked down two free throws with less than a second remaining in the half. Hastings pulled away in the first nine minutes of the second half and went up by 10 on two occasions, the last time at 62-52 with 10:44 left in the game.
Ben Fairclough hit the first of three, three-point shots in the second  half moments later and Dordt eventually pulled  70-70  with a
Luke Rankin basket with 5:55 left in the game. A pair of
Bryce Coppock free throws gave Dordt its first lead of the second half at the 5:12 mark and Dordt had a brief three-point lead at 77-74 with 1:42 left in the game after a Rankin basket.
Hastings answered with a pair of free throws and after a missed Dordt three-point shot Hastings got a run out lay up for a 78-77 lead. The teams exchanged free throws and with :05 left the Defenders had the ball down two with the full court in front of them after a timeout. The Broncos forced a turnover near midcourt and ran out the clock for the two-point win.
THE NUMBERS
- Dordt made 26-57 field goals for 46 percent success and 11-22 three-point shots for 50 percent.
- Hastings converted 30-56 field goals for 54 percent and 9-21 three-point shots.
- Dordt had a 37-26 rebounding advantage but Hastings made up for some of that with just four turnovers.
- Dordt is 4-3 in the GPAC and 9-4 overall.
