The Dordt Defender men's volleyball team made it a four-win weekend with a 3-0 win over the Viterbo VHawks on Saturday, February 11 in Jamestown, North Dakota. The Defenders survived tight decisions in sets one and two and ran away with set three for a 25-23, 25-22, 25-14 win.
Set one featured 10 ties up to 19-19 when
Dylan Kooiman recorded a kill and
Dylan Kooiman and
Caleb Kulesza teamed up for a block. Viterbo answered with two points of their own in a row and it was tied again 23-23 when
Caleb Kulesza and
Brady Frost had back to back kills to forge a 25-23 win.
The Defenders raced to a 10-4 lead in set one and had a 13-8 lead after a service error. Viterbo answered to get to within 16-13 but the three point margin held for Dordt until Viterbo finally got the lead down to 21-19 and 22-20. A Kulesza kill put Dordt up 23-20 but a ballhandling error got Viterbo within 23-21. The teams exchanged points to get Dordt to set point at 24-22 and
Luke Nelson ended it with a kill for a 2-0 match lead.
Set three proved to be a comfortable win for Dordt as the Defenders got up 9-2 and the lead was 17-9 after Viterbo got within three. Dordt outscored the VHawks 8-5 to finish the match as
Brady Frost and
Lukas Van Groningen accounted for back to back kills to finish the match.

"We played scrappy defense. Our communication was strong and we played simple and smart. Our offense came to life in this final match of the invitational. What a great weekend of play to help us grow and continue along with our season. Now we get back to our conference schedule after a wonder day of worship and church tomorrow."
