Six Defenders Hit Qualifying Mark In Final Weekend Before GPAC Championships

The Dordt University women's track and field team hit qualifying marks in five events this weekend in the final meets of the regular season prior to the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Indoor Championships. The conference meet will be held next weekend, Feb.17-18, in Seward, Neb. Mika Kooistra and Shelby Buwalda posted a top five finish and met the 'B' standard to qualify for nationals in the 600m. Kooistra finished third overall among the 22-runner field with a season-best time of 1:36.68 while Buwalda crossed the finish line just .01 seconds behind in fourth place and in a time of 1:36.69. Kooistra's time currently puts her sixth in the GPAC and No.7 all-time at Dordt. Buwalda has the seventh fastest time in the conference and No.8 time in program history.

Jessica Kampman met the qualifying mark in her third individual event of the indoor season with her time in the mile. Kampman placed 22nd overall, first among NAIA runners, with a time of 5:08.22, which meets the 'B' standard. Kampman, who has also qualified in the 3000m and 5000m, has the third fastest time in the GPAC, 31st in the NAIA.

Emilee Heynen had a strong race and met the 'B' standard in the 800m. The sophomore placed seventh among the field of 62 runners with a time of 2:17.01, third best in the conference and 13th fastest in the NAIA. Heynen's time sits seventh all-time at Dordt; she has also qualified for nationals in the 600m and both the 4x400 and 4x800 relays. 

The Defenders qualified for nationals in a relay for the second consecutive day as they hit the 'A' standard in the 4x400. The team of Anmarie Stuit, Buwalda, Heynen and Kooistra ran a season-best time of 3:54.99, fifth fastest in program history and ninth best in the NAIA. 

At Mount Marty...Dordt athletes record 18 top 10 finishes at the Mount Marty Invite on Saturday.
