The Dordt Defender baseball team lost a 9-8 decision to Southwestern (Kansas) on Saturday, February 18 in Winfield, Kansas. The Defenders battled back from two multi-run deficits only to lose the game on a two run-homerun in the bottom of the last frame.
Southwestern got three across in the first inning bot got those three back in the second inning when
Caleb Beard scored on a wild pitch and
Drew Oreskes singled in two to tie the game.
Jason Carrig gave Dordt a brief lead with a single but Southwestern scored a run in the home half of the fourth to knot the score.
In the fifth
Ethan Hoogesteger singled in a run but it wouldn't hold up as Southwester scored one in the fifth and two more in the sixth for a 7-5 lead. Dordt answered with Logan DeVries run scoring single and Beard and DeVries scored on errors for an 8-7 lead. A leadoff walk in the bottom of the seventh put the tying run on and the next batter homered down the leftfield line for the 9-8 win.
THE NUMBERS
- Drew Oreskes was 3-4 at the plate and knocked in two runs.
- Dylan Stanley was 2-4 and all of Dordt's hits were singles.
- Beard scored three runs as courtesy runner for Juan Sanchez.         Â
- Diego Benitez started the game for Dordt and had eight hits with five runs allowed and struck out six with one base on balls.
- Mike Bruell pitched an inning and gave up a hit with two runs and two strikeouts.
- Mason Price took the loss while appearing in relief in the seventh inning.
