The Dordt Defender women's basketball team went to Jamestown, North Dakota and came home with an 82-78 win over the Jimmies to close the regular season.
The Defenders trailed much of the first half, getting down 21-9 late in the first quarter before closing to within 26-20 at the end of the first period. Dordt again got down by as many as 11 in the second quarter before closing to withing 46-42 after a
Hayden Heimensen basket but Jamestown got a three to close the half scoring and took a 49-42 advantage at the break.
Dordt was still down seven at 58-51 when
Macy Sievers and
McKenna Klecker knocked down back to back three-point shots, the Klecker one coming with 4:14 left in the third quarter. A little over a minute later
Faith Van Holland gave Dordt its first lead of the second half on a shot in the paint. Dordt never trailed again in the third and led 64-61 after a Jamestown got a putback right before the horn.
Jamestown managed to tie the game at 70-70 with 6:22 left in the game but
Macy Sievers answered with a basket and
Hayden Heimensen added a field goal as the Defenders took the four point lead. Jamestown was never closer than two the rest of the game with
McKenna Klecker making 5-6 free throws to put the game away 82-78.
THE NUMBERS
- Dordt was 29-62 from the field and 11-28 from the three-point line while converting 13-17 free throws.
- Jamestown had a 33-31 rebounding edge and Dordt committed 10 turnovers while forcing 15.
- Macy Sievers had a career high 24 points with four rebounds and six assists.
- Janie Schoonhoven scored 14 with eight rebounds and seven assists.
- McKenna Klecker and Faith Van Holland each had 11 points.
- Hayden Heimensen and Macey Nielson both had nine points with Heimensen grabbing six rebounds.
- Dordt finishes the regular season with a 26-2 record and a 20-2 GPAC mark.
- Jamestown is 21-7 and 16-6 in the league.
