GAME 1
The Defender baseball team secured a sweep of Cornerstone in play on Tuesday afternoon at Winterhaven, Florida, winning both games in dramatic fashion.
In the opener the Defenders won a 6-4, eight inning decision with two runs in the first extra frame.
Dylan Stanley started the scoring with a two run-double that plated
Ethan Hoogesteger and
Nolan Christianson. After a Cornerstone run in the third Dordt scored a run each in the fourth and fifth on a
Logan Harris sacrifice fly and a
Juan Sanchez single.
The 4-1 lead wasn't enough as Cornerstone pieced together three runs in the sixth inning and after a scoreless seventh
Jason Carrig doubled in Harris for a run and Stanley had a single for insurance that got Carrig in.
THE NUMBERS
- Dordt had a 10-7 hits advantage.
- Logan Harris and Dylan Stanley each had two hits with Stanley knocking in three.
- Carrig, Stanley, Logan De Vries and Hoogesteger all had doubles and Carrig had a stolen base.
- Nick Yeager started and went five and third innings while striking out seven and walking two with five hits allowed.
- Charlie Hennessy got the win in relief and struck out four in an inning and two-thirds and Mike Bruell secured the save with his work in the home half of the eighth inning and he struck out two.
GAME TWO
Dordt needed extra innings in game two of the doubleheader and got a walk off homerun to get the sweep. The Defenders got out to an 8-0 lead with three in the first and five in the second when
Jason Carrig had a three-run homerun in the first and
Kaden Davis had a two-run shot in the second to aid a five run frame.
Cornerstone struck for three in the third and the two teams traded runs in the fifth. Dordt's run came on
Trevor Jackson's solo homerun that kept Dordt in front at the time 9-4. The Eagles got going in the seventh and scored eight for a 12-9 lead but
Logan De Vries gave Dordt a lift with a homerun in the seventh and
Logan Harris doubled in two to force extra innings.
After a scoreless top of the eighth,
Dylan Stanley took the suspense out of it with a solo homerun to give the Defenders a 13-12 win.
THE NUMBERS
- Dordt had a 19-10 hits edge.
- Logan Harris was 4-5 with three runs batted  in.
- Ben Baker and Dylan Stanley each had three hits and Jason Carrig knocked in four with a pair of hits.
- Dordt had five homeruns by five different players.
- Gyeongju Kim went six innings and struck out eight with three walks.
- Chaz Gothard got the win while recording two outs and he struck out one.
- Dordt is now 9-2 and will face Ave Maria in a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 8.
