The Dordt Defender men's volleyball team bounced back from a loss to Menlo on Tuesday night with a 3-2 win over UC Merced Wednesday night in its third match in three nights.
Dordt prevailed 30-28, 17-25, 24-26, 25-22, 15-10 to win its 14
th match of the season.
The Defenders trailed 23-20 in set one but got a kill from
Luke Nelson followed by back to back
Andres Guzman kills to tie the set 23-23. A Merced kill got the Bobcats to set point but
Lukas Van Groningen and Kulesza got Dordt to set point in a reversal of fortune. Dordt never trailed the rest of the set and won with back to back points off a service error and a Kulesza ace.
Merced controlled much of the second set and won 25-17 and took a 2-1 lead in the match with a win in set three after trailing 12-8. The Bobcats pulled even at 20-20 and again at 21-21 before an attack error gave them the 22-21 lead. Dordt rallied to tie the set 24-24 but Merced scored on back to back Chris Morikawa kills for a 26-24 win.
Set four featured six ties up to 14-14 before Dordt scored four unanswered with a service error, a Kulesza kill, an attack error and a Van Groningen block figuring into the streak. The Defenders never relinquished the lead although Merced had it down to a one point lead on several occasions before Kulesza and Guzman put away back to back kills.
Set five was a back and forth affair with a tie at 7-7. Kulesza had back to back kills and
Brady Frost added one before a ball handling error on Merced put Dordt up 11-7. Merced stopped the run but Kulesza started another with a kill and Dordt got to match point 14-8 before prevailing 15-10 on a Frost kill.
COACH CHAD HANSON SAID
"We needed this match tonight and we needed to be successful in this match tonight. Each set gave us different experiences such as playing with a lead, playing from behind, bonus point sets and being down two sets to one but winning sets four and five. I'm really pleased with the growth we are demonstrating with in match adjustments."

- Caleb Kulesza had 21 kills with a solo block, two block assists and eight digs.
- Andres Guzman scored 14 kills with four ace serves and seven digs.
- Brady Frost had 10 kills and six digs.
- Robert Piekarz got to 19 digs Lukas Van Groningen put up 45 assists.
- Dordt had 58 kills and a .255 kill efficiency.
- The Defenders took advantage of 22 Merced service errors.
