Baseball Loses Two At Doane

The Doane Tiger baseball team took a pair from Dordt on Saturday, April 22 in a pair of games played in Crete, Nebraska. The games were originally scheduled to be played in Sioux Center, Iowa, but were moved due to cold, wet and windy conditions.

Doane won game one 7-1 and took game two 11-1 in eight innings.

GAME 1

Doane scraped together a run each in the third and fourth innings before getting three in the fifth on the way to the 7-1 win. Dordt's lone run came in the seventh when Anthony Rodriguez doubled in Dylan Stanley. Stanley led off the inning with a single and Dordt had three of its four hits in the seventh inning with Logan De Vries also singling down the line.

Dordt's chances were limited as they stranded two in the first and didn't have multiple runners on base again until the seventh inning.

THE NUMBERS

  • Dordt had four hits with doubles by Rodrguez and Kaden Davis and singles by De Vries and Stanley.
  • Gyeongju Kim allowed two earned runs with six strikeouts and two walks in five innings and he was charged with a total of five runs.
  • Derek LaBounty and Chance Laswell both pitched in relief.

GAME 2

A six-run third inning gave Doane the cushion it needed on the way to the 11-1 win. Dordt got a run in the first when Dylan Stanley had a sacrifice fly that scored Nolan Christianson. Christianson had a single to start the inning and Anthony Rodriguez had a double to put runners on second and third and Stanley's fly out to right field was the second out of the inning.

Doane scored the six runs in the third with seven hits and the Tigers took advantage of an error to get the runs in.

The Defenders had limited chances as they got multiple runners on base only in the seventh and Doane started the eighth with a pair of solo homeruns before scoring an eventual five runs to end the game in the eighth by virtue of the 10-run difference rule.

THE NUMBERS

  • Christianson, Rodriguez, Davis and Logan De Vries accounted for Dordt's four hits and the Defenders were issued one free pass in the game.
  • Chaz Gothard pitched two and two-third innings and struck out two with five earned runs allowed.
  • Mike Bruell pitched two and a third shutout innings and struck out two with one walk.
  • Dordt is now 4-18 and 16-24 overall and Doane is 19-5 in the league and 33-9 overall.
