RECAP VS DAKOTA STATE

The Dordt Defenders lost their season opener in women's volleyball to Dakota State as part of the GPAC/North Star Conference Challenge hosted by Dakota State in Madison, South Dakota.

The Defenders took an 8-6 lead in set one before four unanswered points by the hosts put them in front for good in the set. The gap got up to a five point margin at 17-12 before Tarren Spartz got a kill for Dordt and Spartz teamed up for a block with Ellie Weg to get within 17-14. A five point Dakota State run ensued and the hosts won set one 25-18.

The Defenders trailed in set two by an 21-17 count before a five point Dordt run put the Defneders up 21-20.  After Dakota State tied the set Ellie Dokter and Weg teamed up for a block and and attack error by Dakota State put the Defenders up 23-22 after the teams exchanged points. Riley Doenhoefer followed with a kill and Macy Kamler finished the set with an ace for a 25-22 Dordt win.

Dakota State came right back with an 8-0 run to start set three.  Dordt rallied to within 17-14 with Isabella Cumana getting a kill but a four-point Dordt run ended after Dakota State called a timeout and got a block on the next point. Dordt got as close as two on four occasions, the last at 24-22 after a Brlyeigh Schweer block but an attack error by the Defenders on the next point gave Dakota State the 25-22 win and a 2-1 match lead.

Dakota State managed to control set four almost from start to finish and held off the Dordt challenges for a 25-18 win.

  • Dakota State had a 52-44 kills advantage and had 10 points on blocks to Dordt's six.
  • The Defenders had a .110 kill efficiency and both teams had 60 digs.
  • Tarren Spartz had 15 kills and a .231 kill efficiency.
  • Ellie Dokter had six kills and Isabelle Cumana had five.
  • Sophie Johnson and Campbell Marshall had 17 and 14 assists respectively.
  • Ellie Weg had three block assists and Makenna Kooima and Madison Vis got to 13 and 10 digs each and Johnson had nine.   
RECAP VS MAYVILLE STATE

The Dordt Defenders dropped match two of their day in Madison, South Dakota in a 3-1 decision with the Mayville State Comets. 

Mayville State led early but Dordt had a six point string to go up 10-9 with a  Kelly McArthur ace serve.  Mayville State recovered to take the lead but Dordt again found its way to tie it at 21-21 and took the lead on a Macy Kamler ace serve.  Bryleigh Schweer followed with a kill for a two point lead and after the two teams traded points the Defenders were at set point. An attack error followed by a Mayville State point tied it at 24-24 and the Comets added two more to finish off the set and the four-point run for the 26-24 win.

The two teams were tied 11 times up to a 16-16 score when Dordt went on a three-point run with an attack error, a Tarren Spartz kill and a second attack error by the Comets accounting for the points. The Defenders never gave up the lead and Riley Doenhoefer finished the set with a kill for a 25-21 win.

Mayville State led 12-10 in set three but grew the lead to 17-13 and then scored eight points in a row for a 25-13 win. The momentum carried over into set four as the Comets pushed in front 5-1. The Defenders had a rally and got to within one point on two occasions, the last at 18-17 and it was still 20-18 when a five point Mayville State run ended the contest and the match.

Dordt will host Morningside in the GPAC opener for both teams on Wednesday, August 30.
