Joslyn Terpstra scored two goals in leading Dordt to a 3-1 victory over Avila (Kan.) in the Defenders season opener played this afternoon at the Zarda Multisport Complex in Kansas City, Mo.
The Defenders win their season opener for the third time in the last four seasons under head coach
Alex Durbin. Avila remains winless for the 2023 season as they fall to 0-3.Â
Â
Playing in her first collegiate match, Terpstra netted the Defenders first two goals, one in each half.
Ellie Stuart converted a penalty kick late for the third goal and helped seal the win for Dordt.Â
"It was awesome to see a freshman on the score sheet twice in her first collegiate match," commented Dordt Head Coach Alex Durbin. "Joslyn had a very impressive day on attacking side."
Scoreless until the 38th minute, the Defenders broke through off a throw-in deep in the Eagles' defensive third.
Karinna Tel dropped a pass to
Sydney Hooyer, who beat her Defender on a cut-back and crossed it to Terpstra, who one-timed the pass into the back of the net.Â
Dordt went ahead 2-0 early in the second half when Tel connected with Terpstra, who was making an overlapping run up the right sideline and kicked a shot past Eagles' goalkeeper, Olivia Seston.Â
The Defenders missed on a couple of great chances to add to their lead over the next 20 minutes, hitting the post on a cross by
Eliza Evans and go high on a penalty kick attempt.Â
Avila made it a one goal match during the 79th minute when, after a Defenders foul in the box, Eagles forward Megan Nugent converted on a penalty kick to make the score 2-1.Â
Five minutes later, Dordt put the match away on a successful penalty kick from Stuart.Â
Dordt will host both Friends (Kan.) and Central Baptist (Ark.) next weekend as part of the Pizza Ranch Classic on Sept.1-2.Â
"Overall, it was a great way to start off our season," commented Durbin. "The first 15-20 minutes were a little rough but we finally settled into our game over the final 25 minutes of the first half. We need to get a little better in front of the net because we did not convert several good scoring chances but scoring three was enough for today."
