Karinna Tel scored a pair of goals in leading the Dordt University women's soccer team to a 4-0 shutout win over Central Baptist (Ark.) in the final match of the Pizza Ranch Classic played tonight under the lights at the Defender Soccer Complex.
Dordt improves its record to 2-1 on the season while the Mustangs drop to 1-2-1.
"I'm happy to end the weekend on a high note," commented Head Coach Alex Durbin. "It was good to see us start the match with some intensity and score two goals within the first 10 minutes. In order to be a top team in the GPAC, we need to improve on how to play a full 90 minutes. It was great to see two freshmen (Ashlyn) and (Abby) connect with another for a couple of goals tonight."
The Defenders turned in a complete performance against Central Baptist as they totaled 22 shots (12 on-goal) and limited the Mustangs to just one shot over the entire 90 minutes.
Scoreless until the fifth minute, Tel netted the first of her two goals when she received a long pass up the right side of the field, beat her defender to the inside and drilled a left-footed shot from the edge of the penalty area past the Mustangs goalkeeper. Less than five minutes later, Dordt went ahead 2-0 when Tel received an
Abby Worthy pass right in front of the goal area and touched a shot into the back of the net.
Up 2-0 and heading into the 71st minute, Dordt scored its final two goals within a span of 50 seconds. The first was scored when
Abby Foster carried the ball up the right sideline, crossed it into the box where
Ashlyn Marjama touched it back into the far side of the net for her first career goal. Moments later, Foster received a pass in in the middle of the field, willed her way past two Defenders and then scored her first career goal.
Ashlynn Marjama scores the Defenders third goal:
