Fourth Quarter Surge Lifts Defenders Past Jamestown

Bailey Beckman scored 16 points to lead four Defenders in double figures as top-ranked Dordt University stayed unbeaten in conference play with a 74-63 road win against the University of Jamestown tonight in Jamestown, N.D.  Dordt (9-0 GPAC, 14-1 overall) won its second consecutive game since its only loss of the season, at NCAA D-I South Dakota State, on December 12. The Defenders have a 1.5 game lead on Concordia heading into Saturday's showdown against the 11th-ranked Bulldogs. 

Tied at 51 going into the fourth quarter, Beckman scored seven consecutive points for the Defenders that sparked an 11-2 run overall and gave Dordt a 62-53 lead with six minutes left to play. Two minutes later, Karly Gustafson recorded a steal and lay-up to put the Defenders up 10 at the four-minute mark. 

Jamestown scored the next five points and trailed by just five after a pair of free throws by Kate Busek with under a minute to go. Dordt, however, made all six of its free throws down the stretch, two each by Beckman, Macy Sievers and Gracie Schoonhoven, to put the game away.

Joining Beckman in double figures were Gracie Schoonhoven (15pts), Gustafson (14pts) and Macy Sievers (12pts). Janie Schoonhoven pulled down a game-high nine rebounds and Sievers led in assists with four. 

After falling behind early, Dordt went on the game's first substantial run as a Gracie Schoonhoven completed a 9-2 surge to give the Defenders an 11-6 lead. Dordt led by three at the first break and used an 11-2 run, finished off with a basket by Eliana Kuperus, late in the second quarter to take 34-26 advantage into halftime. 

Jamestown outscored the Defenders 10-4 over the first three minutes of the third quarter to get back to within two (38-36). Another run by the Jimmies gave the hosts their first lead of the second half, 48-47, after free throws by Busek with 2:07 left in the third quarter. Two free throws from Gustafson and a jumper in the paint by Hayden Heimensen sent the game into the fourth quarter tied, 51-51.
