The Dordt University women's soccer team defeated Doane (Neb.) 3-0 in a conference match-up played this afternoon on the Defenders home field.
The Defenders earned their fourth consecutive win and push their unbeaten streak to eight. Dordt moves into sole possession of second place in the current GPAC standings with a 4-0-1 record, 8-1-1 overall, two points in back of Hastings. Doane lost for the first time in GPAC play and is 2-1-2 in the conference, 4-6-2 overall.
How It Happened:
- scoreless until the 25th minute, Maria Zylstra received a Joslyn Terpstra cross and touched a shot into the back of the net, scoring her first goal of the season and giving Dordt a 1-0 lead
- Karinna Tel put the Defenders up 2-0 with a brilliant goal during the 44th minute. Tel, taking a Defenders corner kick and on a return pass from Keely Kolbrek, took two dribbles and blasted a shot that deflected off the far post and into the goal
- Dordt netted its final goal midway into the second half on a play initiated with a Abby Worthy pass, received by Jenna Roberts, who one-timed a pass to Tel for a shot that deflected off the crossbar to the feet of Eliza Evans and kicked into the goal
By the Numbers:
- Dordt outshot Doane 14-4, including an 8-2 edge with shots on net
- Tel (3) and Zylstra (2) led the Defenders in shots on-goal
- Jenna Wright made two saves in 85 minutes and combined with Hailey De Witt for the shutout
- three Defenders, Kolbrek, Worthy and Paige Miller, played the full 90 minutes
- 19 players saw field time for the Defenders
- Dordt held Doane's leading scorer, McKenna Rathbun, to one shot
- Tigers goal keeper Virginia Johnson made five saves
Notes:
- with her assist on the Defenders final goal, Tel is now the program's all-time leader with 33 for her career
- Dordt has not been shutout this season
- the Defenders have scored multiple goals in all but two matches this season
- Zylstra scored her first collegiate goal
- both Terpstra and Tel have eight assists, ranking second in the GPAC
