The Dordt University women's soccer team lost to Morningside 2-1 in a conference match played tonight on Elwood-Olsen Field in Sioux City, Iowa.
The Defenders lost for the first time in the GPAC, falling to 4-1-1 in the conference, 8-2-1 overall. Morningside won its second consecutive match and improves to 2-2-2 in the GPAC, 3-3-4 overall.
How It Happened:
- Dordt had the first scoring opportunity just two minutes into the match but Morningside goalie Kyla Syverson made a save on a Karinna Tel breakaway and shot
- the Mustangs broke through with the first goal of the match when Melissa Tsatiris put a shot past Defenders goalie Jenna Wright during the 16th minute
- Morningside scored again on a goal by Julie Raffel from outside the penalty box at the 30th minute
- leading 2-0 early in the second half, the Mustangs had a goal called off due to a foul by the hosts
- Dordt scored moments later off a free kick taken by Abby Worthy that eventually ended up at the feet of Tel, who blasted a shot from around 25-feet into the back of the net
- the Defenders had a couple of scoring chances late, including three corner kicks, but were unable to convert
By the Numbers:
- Dordt was outshot 20-8, 10-6 on shot on-goal
- Tel totaled three shots on-goal while Joslyn Terpstra, Abby Foster and Eliza Evans all had one shot
- Jenna Wright made eight saves
- Wright, Abby Worthy and Paige Miller all played a full 90 minutes
- the Defenders played 18 players, all of which saw nine minutes of field time
- Morningside's Kyla Syverson made five saves
- Keyara Harmon and Melissa Tsatiris both had four shots on goal
Defender Notes:
- today's loss snaps an 8-match unbeaten streak and is the first since August 24 vs 25th-ranked MidAmerica Nazarene
- Tel scored her GPAC-leading 18th goal of the season
- Wright now has 52 saves this season, fourth best in the conference
