Defenders Stay Unbeaten; Win Top-Five Match-Up Against Concordia

The No.1 Dordt University women's basketball team earned a 94-84 overtime win against No.5 Concordia in an early season showdown between top five teams played this afternoon at the De Witt Gymnasium. 

The Defenders stay unbeaten, improving to 3-0 in the GPAC, 7-0 overall; Concordia drops its first game in conference play, falling to 2-1 in the league, 4-2 overall.

Dordt outscored Concordia 14-4 in the extra period, limiting the Bulldogs to just one field goal in seven attempts, and led by Janie Van Donge who netted seven of her 16 points in overtime. The Defenders made 10-of-11 free throws and held an 8-2 rebound advantage over the final five minutes.

How It Happened

  • trailing 8-5 early, back-to-back three-pointers by Olivia Harazin and Willow Bleeker gave the Defenders their first lead, 13-8, at the 6-minute mark
  • a basket by Desta Hoogendoorn and lay-up by Harazin ended the first quarter with Dordt in front, 20-17
  • leading by three (38-35), Dordt closed the first half with a 7-0 run, ending with a Hoogendoorn lay-up, to take its largest lead 45-35
    • Dordt held Concordia scoreless over the final 3-plus minutes
    • the Defenders made 5-of-9 three pointers in the second quarter
  • Dordt led by double digits for most of the third quarter, and following five consecutive points scored by Macy Sievers, held its largest lead of the game (63-49) with 3:07 left in the third period
  • with the Defenders still leading by 12 (70-58) early in the fourth quarter, Concordia went on its best run of the game, outscoring the hosts 14-2 to tie the game at 72 after a couple of free throws by Raelyn Kelly
  • a Sievers lay-up put Dordt back in front but a three-point play by Kristin Vieselmeyer and free throws from Kendal Brigham gave Concordia its largest lead (77-74) with three minutes left
  • both teams went scoreless on their next few possessions until Harazin knocked down a corner three-pointer to tie the game at 77 with 1:12 left to play
  • a three-point play by Van Donge put Dordt in front 80-78 but Concordia sent the game into overtime with a basket by Brigham
  • in the overtime and the score tied at 84, Dordt went ahead for good on a pair of Harazin free throws to start a 10-0 run to end the game

By the Numbers:

  • Dordt shot 43% for the game, 44% (11/25) from the 3-point line
  • Concordia shot 39% for the game, 30% (8/27) from beyond the arc
  • the Defenders outrebounded Concordia 58-31, pulling down 18 offensive rebounds
  • both teams were effective from the free throw line; Dordt made 23/26 (89%), Concordia 20/30 (67%)
  • six Defenders scored in double figures, led by Harazin, who matched her career-high with 20 points
  • Sievers netted all 16 of her points in the second half
  • Van Donge also scored 16 points, 12 in the second half and overtime period
  • Willow Bleeker added 14 points, going 4-of-9 from the 3-point arc
  • Ellie Lems and Desta Hoogendoorn contributed 11 points each
  • Van Donge (15 rebounds) and Sievers (13 rebounds) led the Defenders in rebounding and recorded double-doubles
  • Sievers finished two assists shy of a triple-double
  • Kristin Vieselmeyer poured in a game-high 27 points for the Bulldogs before fouling out in the overtime period

  • Van Donge has scored in double-figures and recorded a double-double in every game this season
  • Sievers reached double-figures in her sixth game and has three double-doubles this season
  • Harazin matched her career-high with 20 points (also done vs College of the Ozarks)
