HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defenders used a strong second and third set to take control of their match with Viterbo and won a 3-1 non-conference decision. The win was the final test before GPAC play begins on Saturday, February 24.
The two teams were even with Dordt trailing 12-11 in set one but back to back points allowed the VHawks a 14-11 lead. A service error by Viterbo followed and the teams continued back and forth with Dordt grabbing a quick lead at 18-17 on back to back attack errors. Another four point run by Viterbo pushed them ahead 22-18 but Dordt rallied to tie the set at 24-24 with kills by
Nicodemus Elliott and
Diego Santiago and a block. Viterbo answered with two blocks to secure the set one win as Dordt was plagued by hitting errors in the match and had more errors than kills.
Dordt bounced back with an 11-7 lead but Viterbo tied it 11-11. A 7-1 run by Dordt gave the some breathing room and they won 25-16. Â With the momentum squarely behind them Dordt extended the lead to 13-6 and rolled to a 25-13 win with just one attack error out of 20 attacks and 18 kills in the set.
Using a diverse attack the Defenders built the lead again in set four with Dordt leading 24-17. A service error followed and started a 7-0 run that saw the VHawks fight off match point and forced extra points.
Lance Vermeer had a kill for Dordt and Viterbo got a kill by Logan Amdur.Â
Lukas Van Groningen followed with back to back kills and Dordt won the set and match 27-25.
