The Dordt University baseball team dropped a pair of games on its second day of its Spring Break Trip in Florida. The Defenders lost 10-5 to Lawrence Tech (Mich.) in game one and were defeated 9-4 by Siena Heights (Mich.) in game two. Both games took place in Lake Wales, Fla.
The Defenders are now 2-2 on their spring break trip and 6-10 overall. They will play two more games on Friday, March 8; vs Calumet at 8am and vs Cumberlands at 6pm.
Phoenix West led the Defender offense, going a combined 4-for-6 with four RBIs.
Jason Carrig had one hit in each game, including a home run against Siena Heights, and drove in three runs.Â
Game One: 10-5 loss to Lawrence Tech
- Key Plays:
- Lawrence Tech grabbed a 3-0 lead, scoring a pair of runs in the first and one more in the second, off Defender starting pitcher Jared Hughes
- Joel Stirneman led off with a single, advanced to third after a double by Brett Reed; both players came around to score later in the inning on a sacrifice fly and groundout
- Jack Burch hit a solo home run to put the Blue Devils in front 3-0 in the second
- back-to-back doubles by Logan Walker and Stirneman led to the fourth run by Lawrence Tech and chased Hughes from the game
- another double, this time by Reed, put Lawrence Tech ahead 5-0 going into the bottom of the fifth
- Dordt scored its first runs on a double by Logan Harris and bases loaded walks to West and Carrig
- Lawrence Tech added to its lead with two runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh
- Stirneman hit a two-out RBI single in the sixth and came through again with a two-run single in the seventh
- the Defenders scored in the sixth inning on a Drew Oreskes solo home run, his fifth of the season
- West hit an RBI double and came around to score the Defenders final run after an RBI single by Carrig in the seventh
- By the Numbers:
- Dordt was outhit 11-6 and committed the only error of the game
- Hughes (1-1) lost for the first time this season, giving up six hits and five earned run in 4.1 innings
- West (2/3) and Carrig (1/3) combined for half of Dordt's hits and four of the five RBIs
- Ethan Hochendon (1-0) allowed two hits and two earned runs in 4.2 innings to pick up his first win
- Stirneman and Reed both had four hits for Lawrence Tech
Game Two: 9-4 loss to Siena Heights

- leading 2-1, Siena Heights put the game away with a 6-run third inning
- the Saints totaled four hits and three walks in the inning while sending 10 batters to the plate
- Brock Olmstead and Nick Tiller both had two-run singles for the Saints
- Dordt scored a single run in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings
- Logan Harris had an RBI groundout, scoring Dylan Stanley, in the second
- West tagged RBI singles in the third and fifth innings
- Carrig hit a solo home run in the fourth, his second of the season
- By the Numbers:
- Dordt totaled seven hits compared to nine by Siena Heights
- Defender pitching walked seven batters; the Saints' pitching staff did not allow a free pass
- West and Nolan Christensen had two hits each to lead the Defenders
- Adam McClanahan (0-1) gave up two hits and five runs in 2.2 innings to get the loss
- Julio Romero gave the Defenders 4.1 good innings in relief, giving up four hits, one run and struck out four
- Luc Olson (2-0) earned his second win of the season, giving up six hits and four runs in four innings
