HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defender men's volleyball lost a 3-0 decision to Olivet Nazarene by the smallest margin possible in a match played at La Crosse, Wisconsin on Saturday afternoon, March 9.
Set one featured 13 ties until Dordt was able to pull out to an 18-16 lead with a three unanswered points with Cade Schmidt and Nicodemus Elliott bookending an attack error by Olivet Nazarene with kills. The Tigers responded with a three-point run of their own and Dordt never led again in dropping the 25-23 decision.
Set two featured little separation as well with the Tigers taking a 23-21 lead late on a kill and attack error. Dordt's Lance Vermeer had back to back kills and then teamed up with Cade Schmidt to get Dordt to set point. Three kills in a row by Olivet Nazarene ended the set and gave the Chicagoland Conference member a 2-0 lead.
Set three followed suit with the two teams tied several times to 19-19. A Robert Piekarz ace serve followed by an attack error and another ace put Dordt up 22-19 and the Defenders eventually got to set point with a Schmidt kill for a 24-20 lead. After an Olivet Nazarene timeout the Tigers scored back to back points and forced a Dordt timeout. Another Olivet Nazarene kill followed by an attack error forced another Dordt timeout and Olivet Nazarene won it on a block and kill to finish the set and match.
THE NUMBERS
- Olivet Nazarene had a 47-40 kills advantage with a .299 kill efficiency while Dordt had a .204 kill efficiency.
- Dordt had a 3-1 ace edge but Olivet Nazarene accounted for six points with blocks while Dordt had three.
VS VITERBO
HOW IT HAPPENED
Dordt secured a set one win but the host Viterbo V-Hawks came back to win three sets in a row to win the non-conference match on Saturday.
Dordt raced to a 16-10 lead in set one and didn't allow Viterbo to get back within striking distance while winning a 25-20 decision. Viterbo quickly reversed fortune with a five-point lead almost immediately and held on as Dordt charged back to within 22-20 on a four-point run capped by Diego Santiago's kill. The teams swapped points to 23-21 but Viterbo scored the final two points of the set to tie the match 1-1.
Viterbo controlled set three almost from the start with a 6-3 advantage and went on to win 25-19 as Dordt got no closer than three. Needing a win in set four the Defenders were down 12-6 early but eventually took a 19-18 lead with five points, ending the run with a block by Cade Schmidt and Spencer Franken. Â Viterbo came back with a three-point run to reestablish a lead and held off Dordt 25-23.
THE NUMBERS
- Viterbo had a 53-46 kills advantage and hit for a .258 kill efficiency.
- Viterbo had a 10-6 points from blocks advantage.
- Dordt is now 3-9 this season.
