Defenders Split Baseball Doubleheader With Dakota Wesleyan

GAME 1
HOW IT HAPPENED


The Dordt Defenders built an 8-1 lead and then held on to win 9-8 in game one of its doubleheader with Dakota Wesleyan on Tuesday night, April 9.

Wesleyan scored the first run of the game but a doubleheader squashed the threat in the first inning.  Dordt came back to take the lead as Chaz Gothard settled in as Logan De Vries produced a run with a ground out and Carson Belcher singled in Drew Oreskes for the lead.



The Defenders added to the lead with six in the fourth with Jason Carrig singling in two runs and De Vries knocked in another run with a single.  After a sacrifice fly Dylan Stanley doubled in two runs for an 8-1 lead.









Wesleyan began to chip away at the lead with a pair of fifth inning runs and the Tigers got two more in the sixth to get within 8-5.  Dordt got one run for insurance when Logan Harris scored on a passed ball in the sixth inning.

Trailing 9-5, the Tigers made it interesting with a run of their own on a bases loaded passed ball and a single knocked in two runs but the Tigers stranded the tying run at first base with Dordt's Julio Romero working the final frame on the mound.



THE NUMBERS
  • Wesleyan outhit Dordt 12-10.
  • Dordt batters worked for five bases on balls while Defender pitchers issued one walk but hit two batters.

      • Dylan Stanley was 2-3 with a run scored  and two runs batted in on a double and single.
      • Drew Oreskes was 2-2 with two singles.
      • Carson Belcher was 2-3 with two singles and a run batted.
      • Logan De Vries had a single and two runs batted in.
      • Chaz Gothard got the win in five innings of work and struck out eight with a walk and was charged with one earned run.
GAME 2
HOW IT HAPPENED

Dakota Wesleyan came from behind and defeated Dordt 4-3 in game two of their doubleheader on Tuesday.

Wesleyan scored the only run of the first five innings in the top of the fifth but Dordt answered in the home half of the third on a Nolan Christianson bunt single that scored Logan Harris and Morgan Wilkins doubled in Christianson and Dylan Stanley for a 3-1 lead.





Dakota Wesleyan had an answer with three in the top of the seventh and Dordt was retired in the home half of the seventh.

THE NUMBERS
  • Dordt had a 6-5 hits advantage.
  • Six different players had one hit each with Morgan Wilkins recording the only extra base hit with a double.
  • Robert Doble pitched three and two-third innings and struck out five while pitching shutout baseball.
  • Adam McClanahan absorbed the loss.
  • Dakota Wesleyan is 14-22 and Dordt is 8-29.

Dordt will travel to Orange City to face Northwestern on Friday and Saturday, April 12 and 13 in a pair of doubleheaders.
