Men's Soccer | Defenders Fall After Last Minute Goal

The Dordt Defenders suffered a heartbreaking loss in the first game of the Pizza Ranch Classic on Friday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Defenders found themselves in a back and fourth game against the Grand View Vikings. Dordt had a few chances early on a shot from Nolan Karel and two corner kicks in the first six minutes but were unable to capitalize on them. Shortly after Dordt's initial push to start the game, Grand View came back with an attack of their own that saw Pietro Piacenza and Warren Sung each get their shots blocked before senior goalkeeper, Mitchell Dryden, secured his first save of the contest off a shot from Clement Scaccia. Marco Laenen also had an opportunity late in the first half but it was saved by the Vikings goalkeeper. The game was scoreless at half.

Dordt's best chance came in the 56th minute. Santiago Carvajal forced a turnover that landed the feet of Phil Appelt. Appelt took a touch and found Tyson Reitsma in space and Reitsma was able to thread a ball to Tate Hanson making a run into the penalty area and gave a one-touch cross to Jacob Narkis waiting at the top of the six-yard box. Narkis put the ball on frame but goalkeeper, Scott Penngelly made an incredible save to keep the shutout.

Grand View threatened on a free kick that found a Viking head that sent the ball to the back post before Dryden was able to make a diving save to his left.

Each team would trade chances for the rest of the game before Grand View struck on a counter attack with 44 seconds remaining in the game. Marco Kramer made a perfect pass into the penalty area for Warren Sung who put the ball into the near post to secure the win for the Vikings.

By the numbers:

  • Dordt took eight shots, four on goal
  • Grand View took 11 shots, four on goal
  • Mitch Dryden secured three saves
  • Jacob Narkis lead the team with two shots, one on goal
  • Pol Calvo, Tate Hansen, and Marco Laenen each had a shot on goal

Dordt has now lost three straight and their record falls to 0-3-1. Dordt will face Jamestown tomorrow, August 31st at 7:15 pm in Sioux Center.
