The Dordt University women's soccer team earned a 6-0, shutout win over Avila (Mo.) in its home opener played tonight on the Defenders home pitch in Sioux Center, Iowa.
The Defenders improve to 2-1 on the season and pushed its goals scored this season to 12; Avila fall to 0-1 this season.
Key Plays:
- scoreless until the 18th minute, Defenders senior Ellie Stuart netted the game winner and her first goal of the season off an assist by Karinna Tel
- Tel put the Defenders up 2-0 when she received an early pass from Maria Zylstra, dribbled by a couple of Avila defenders and touched it past the Eagles keeper during the 27th minute
- Dordt added its third goal just before the half when Jenna Roberts carried the ball to the corner, crossed it into the box and Jenaya Cleveland put it away for the first goal of her career
- leading 3-0, Tel added to the Defenders lead with her second goal after a long pass by Joslyn Terpstra during the 49th minute
- Roberts scored the Defenders fifth goal when she received a pass from Abby Foster and blasted a shot that hit the crossbar and dropped down into the goal
- Dordt scored its final goal off a corner kick by Abby Worthy
By the Numbers:
- Dordt totaled 18 shots, 11 on net; Avila accounted for seven shots, three on frame
- Jenna Wright (1-1) made three saves and picked up her seventh career shutout
