Dordt split two matches on Saturday that both went the maximum five sets in North Sioux City, South Dakota. Dordt's upset bid with no. 22 Valley City State came up short and the Defenders ended the day with a win over Dickinson State to enter conference play next week with a 6-4 overall record.

The Dordt Defenders lost a 3-2 decision to no. 22 rated Valley City State on Saturday in the first of two matches played on the day in North Sioux City, South Dakota. The Defenders were unable to close the match with a 2-1 sets lead and lost sets four and five 25-16 and 15-10 after taking the 2-1 lead with a 25-23 win in set three.
The Vikings led much of set one and had a 23-20 lead before three straight points tied it 23-23. Dordt's last two points in the run came on ace serves by
Tarren Spartz. The teams traded points and Valley City State eventually got to set point before
Ellie Dokter's kill tied it and
Ellie Weg got a kill on the next point and
Haley Kuperus recorded a block for the 27-25 win.
Set two featured 12 ties to a 24-24 deadlock before a service error gave Valley City State a 25-24 lead and a kill by the Vikings tied the match 1-1. The Vikings then grabbed the early lead in set three and were up 7-3 and 13-9 before Dordt rallied to tie the match 13-13 two the last two points coming off blocks. The teams swapped points to 19-19 before Spartz and
Myra Carlson each had kills and an attack error stretched the difference to 22-19. The Vikings eventually tied it 23-23 but Dordt got kills from
Ellie Dokter and
Ellie Weg to finish the set.
A 4-0 run midway through set four put the Vikings up 17-11 and eventually won 25-16. Dordt seemed to recover in set five and got up 7-4 after a block by
Ellie Weg and
Haley Kuperus but the Vikings came back with five points in a row. Dordt did tie it at 9-9 after a timeout but the Vikings closed with six of the last seven points including a five point run to win 15-10.

Dordt secured a five set win over Dickinson State to finish its' day 1-1 and its' weekend 2-2 at a classic hosted in North Sioux City, South Dakota.
13 ties marked the early play in set one with the final deadlock coming at 16-16 as part of a 3-0 run by the BlueHawks. Dordt was unable to tie the set and Dickinson State won 25-22 while scoring three of the last four points.
Dordt led by as many as four points early in set two but relinquished the lead at 16-15 on a 4-0 Dickinson State run. A service error tied the set and Spartz had a kill allowing Dordt to retake the lead. Dordt never trailed again and scored the final six points to pull away from a 19-19 tie to win. Three different Defenders had kills in the run to secure the win and
Kelly McArthur had an ace.
Set three followed the same blueprint as neither team was able to pull away and it was tied 13-13. Dordt scored three out of four points with Kuperus getting two kills in the run and after Dickinson State had it down to 16-15 the Defenders scored five in a row with Dickinson State attack errors accounting for four of the points. Dordt eventually won 25-17 but Dickinson State had a quick response.
The BlueHawks got up 18-11 and never led by less than six in winning the set 25-17 and forced a decisive set five. Dordt maintained control in set five and a Spartz kill made it 12-7. Dickinson State put together a charge and with three straight kills and an ace serve had it down to 12-11. A Spartz kill ended the run and Dordt scored back to back points after a Dickinson State kill to win the set 15-12.
