Defenders Play Midland to Draw in GPAC Opener

The Dordt Defenders played the Midland Warriors to a 1-1 tie on Wednesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Defenders stuck first in the 11th.  After a foul around midfield, Phil Appelt sent a ball to the near corner that bounced around before Trigve Elkins found Pol Calvo who sent a ball into the box. A Midland defender got a head to the ball but it fell to Nolan Karel who was waiting at the top of the box and hit a one-time volley to the back post for the first goal of the contest.

Midland had chances throughout the night including a shot by Brayden Wright that was saved by a diving Edward Puglisi. Midland scored the equalizer in the 44th minute after a Hugo Garcia-Rosado Duran shot.

Dordt had a chance to take the lead in the 67th minute after Anton Forsch put a ball off the far post from a shot inside the penalty area. Dordt's best chance to score the game winner came in the 88th minute after Marco Laenen got a slotted pass that left him in a foot race and a one-on-one with the keeper. Laenen took a shot and pushed it wide. Despite two red cards shown to Midland, Dordt was unable to break the tie.

By the numbers: Dordt's record is now 2-3-2 overall and 0-0-1 in conference play. Dordt will host Concordia (Neb.) on Saturday, September 21. Kick off will be at 4:15 pm.
