Defenders Play Concordia to a 1-1 Stalemate

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa- The Dordt Defenders played the Concordia (Neb.) to a 1-1 deadlock on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Much of the first 10 minutes of the first half was controlled by Concordia. The Bulldogs fired two shots that were missed and blocked before taking a corner that failed to produce any chances. Tyson Reitsma was able to put a shot on frame but goalkeeper Nolan Fuelberth was able to make a save to his right. Dordt continued to have chances including a corner kick and a shot by Anton Forsch that missed high.

Dordt got on the board first on a penalty kick converted by Jacob Narkis in the 23rd minute. Tate Hansen gave a threaded pass to Tyson Reitsma on the sideline. Reitsma outpaced his defender and cut into the box before taking a shot that hit the crossbar and bounced back into play. Pol Calvo got a head to it before a Bulldog defender had a save of his own, clearing it off the goal line. It fell back to Hansen about 10 yards out and the shot was once again blocked. Appeals for a handball were unsuccessful and the ball found Phil Appelt waiting at the top of the penalty area. Appelt took an off balance shot that took an unfortunate bounce off a Bulldog defender's leg and hit his arm to cause the penalty kick. Jacob Narkis stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way for the opening goal.

Concordia scored the equalizer in the 35th minute after a foul gave them a free kick in a dangerous spot. D'Andre Williams took the free kick that sailed to the back post where Michael Wyvill tapped it in to even things up.

Dordt struggled to gain momentum throughout the second half but were able to create a few chances including a Jacob Narkis shot that missed frame in the 79th minute and a Marco Laenen shot that missed wide right in the 88th minute. Concordia had one last chance to steal a win but Aidan Nachi hit the header wide left.

By the numbers: Dordt is now 2-3-3 overall and 0-0-2 in GPAC play. Their next game will be against Waldorf on Wednesday, September 28 at 7:30 pm in Sioux Center, Iowa.
