Appelt's Late Game Heroics Give Defenders the Win

The Dordt men's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory over Mount Marty on Saturday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Both teams found plenty of chances in the first half but none were able to break through including a Tyson Reitsma shot that went off the crossbar in the 10th minute.

Dordt scored the game winner in the 81st minute after Nolan Karel came away with the steal in the Lancers half. Arnau Gonzalez collected the loose ball and gave a strong pass to Jacob Narkis. Narkis one-touch passed it to Tyson Reitsma who had to make a defender miss but it was eventually poked away by a Lancer defender. Phil Appelt read it well and took a one-touch shot that short hopped the keeper's hands and snuck into the near post.

Mount Marty had a late chance to tie it off a free kick just outside the box but it sailed wide. The Lancers also earned a corner kick in the 89th minute and put everyone in the box for it but were unable to put a shot on frame.

By the numbers:
  • Dordt put up 13 shots, three on goal
  • Mount Marty put up 10 shots, two on goal
  • Mitchell Dryden secured two saves
  • Antoine Le Berre secured two saves
  • Phil Appelt scored his second goal of the season, ninth of his career
  • This is Appelt's first game winner
Dordt's record improves to 4-3-3 overall and 2-0-2 in GPAC play. Dordt is on a six game unbeaten streak. Their next game will be on October 5 against the Doane Tigers in Sioux Center, Iowa.
