The Dordt Defenders went on the road Wednesday night, January 15 and handed Northwestern its first loss of the season with a 78-75 decision in Great Plains Athletic Conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The two teams were tied 12-12 when
Luke Rankin converted a three-point basket at the 10:50 mark and the senior guard added a jump shot with 5:49 left in the half to push Dordt's lead to 25-18.
Northwestern's response was swift and a Zach LaFave basket with 2:46 left in the half put the hosts up 32-30. The teams went back and forth with LaFave's three-point shot with :35 left before half giving Northwestern a 37-36 halftime lead.
The teams were separated by no more than three points in the second half and Dordt was hanging on to a 55-53 lead when
Ty Van Essen converted a three-point shot with 5:28 left in the game and
Bryce Coppock added a three-point basket after a missed free throw. The visitors eventually went up 69-58 and still led by 10 with 1:39 left in the game after a pair of
Lucas Lorenzen free throws.
Northwestern eventually took advantage of a Dordt turnover and just enough missed free throws to get within 78-75 but a three-point shot at the horn to tie the game was just off the mark and Dordt held on to the win.
Dordt is 18-1 overall and 10-1 in the GPAC.
Northwestern is 17-1 overall and 9-1 in the GPAC.
Dordt will travel to face Midland on Saturday in Fremont, Nebraska.
