Stellar Defense Keys Win Over Northwestern

Top-ranked Dordt University limited Northwestern to a season-low in points in its 68-48 road win in a Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) women's basketball match-up played tonight at the Bultman Center.  The Defenders, who earned the No.1 ranking in the fifth straight poll that was released earlier today by the NAIA, improve their record to 12-0 in the GPAC, 18-0 overall. Northwestern falls to 8-4 in the GPAC, 12-6 overall. 

How It Happened:

  • tied at 9-9, Dordt outscored the host Red Raiders 14-6 over the final 4-plus minutes in the first quarter to take the lead for good
    • five different players scored during the decisive run for the Defenders, led by Macy Sievers and Ellie Lems with four points each
  • leading by nine (26-17) early in the second quarter, Dordt put the game away with a 12-2 run where they held Northwestern to one field for nearly eight minutes
    • Janie Van Donge began and ended the scoring run as she gave Dordt a 38-19 lead with a lay-up at the 2:49 mark of the second quarter
  • Dordt shot 57% and limited the Red Raiders to 24% in a first half that ended with the Defenders in front 43-23
  • consecutive Dordt baskets by Gracie Schoonhoven and Lems gave the Defenders their largest lead, 57-30, with 4:53 left in the third quarter
  • the Defenders went scoreless over the final 4-plus minutes as Northwestern trailed 57-35 by the end of the third quarter after a lay-up by Jenna Kluxdal
  • a Van Donge basket at the start of the final quarter put Dordt in front 59-35 and they led by at least 18 points the rest of the way  

By the Numbers:

  • Dordt shot 47% for the game, 57% in the first half, as they raced out to a 43-23 halftime lead
  • Northwestern was held to a season-low 27% from the field, 22% in the first half
  • both teams struggled from the 3-point line; Dordt 3/14 (21%) / Northwestern 5/18 (28%)
  • Dordt made a season-low three free throws (3/6); Northwestern made 7-of-9 attempts
  • the Defenders held the advantage on the boards, 45-41

  • Ashtyn Wobig led Northwestern with 11 points, going 3-for-3 from beyond the arc
  • Hali Anderson was the only other Red Raider to score in double figures, ending with 10 points

Defender Notes:

  • the 48 points given up is the third lowest total of the season
  • this marks the third straight game the Defenders limited their opponent to under 60 points
  • this is the fifth time this season Dordt held its opponent to under 30% field goal percentage
  • Dordt has outrebounded its opponent in 10 consecutive and 17-of-18 games this season
  • Sievers scored in double figures for the team-leading 17th time this season
  • Sievers recorded her eighth double-double (5th of points + rebounds)
  • Van Donge scored in double figures for the 16th time this season
  • this was the seventh time that Schoonhoven scored in double figures
  • Lems has scored in double figures in four games this season
  • Sievers moved past Julia DeKoekkoek (2007-11) and into 21st place in career scoring (1,016pts)
