Lucas Lorenzen scored a game-high 26 points and
Bryce Coppock netted 19 in leading 11th-ranked Dordt University to a 94-73 win over Doane in a Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) men's basketball match-up played tonight at the De Witt Gym.
The Defenders improve to 15-0, matching their best start in program history (also in 2011-12), and move to 7-0 in the conference. Doane lost its fourth straight game and falls to 2-5 in the GPAC, 7-8 overall.
How It Happened:
- Doane scored the first five points of the game on a jumper by Caleb Hrabik and a three-pointer made by Brady Timm
- the Defenders responded with an 18-4 run over the next six minutes to take the lead for good
- a three-pointer by Coppock put the Defenders in front for good (10-9)
- a three-point play by Ben Fairclough capped the 18-4 run and gave Dordt an 18-9 advantage
- a three-pointer by Xavier Van Beek followed by a lay-up from Connor Millikan put the Defenders up by double digits (28-18) for the first time (8:32 left)
- Luke Rankin and Lorenzen sparked another Defenders run, this time an 8-0 surge, that pushed the lead to 36-20 at the 6:50 mark
- three straight baskets by Jake Hargens gave Dordt its largest lead of the first half (45-27) with 1:55 left
- Lorenzen knocked down a long three-pointer at the buzzer for a 50-33 advantage at the break
- Doane trimmed the Defenders lead down to 10 (63-53) following a three-pointer from Glavine McDonald at the 14-minute mark
- Dordt responded and put the game away with a 12-0 run as Coppock, Lorenzen and Jake Proctor (2) hit four straight three-pointers
- the Defenders lead grew to 23 points on a Tyler Prins three-pointer (9:39) and to as much as 26 on a pair of Coppock free throws
By the Numbers:
- Dordt shot 55% for the game, 63% in the first half as they outscored Doane 50-33
- the Defenders made 13-of-32 three-point attempts (41%) and went 9-for-10 from the free throw line
