A pair of second-half goals propelled the Dordt University women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Doane University (Neb.) on Saturday afternoon at the Defender Soccer Complex.
The win pushes the Defenders record to 6-2-1 in the GPAC, 7-5-2 overall; Doane drops to 5-2-1 in the conference, 7-6-2 overall
After a tightly contested first half, the Defenders came out firing in the second, outshooting the Tigers 12-1 over the final 45 minutes. The breakthrough came in the 64th minute when junior
Brooke Marjama capitalized on a loose ball just outside the box to score the first goal of her career and give Dordt the lead.
Just five minutes later, Dordt doubled its advantage when
Karinna Tel scored on a return pass from
Abi Keltner off a Defenders corner kick from the right side of the field.
By the Numbers:
- Dordt held a commanding 17-2 advantage in total shots, including 12-1 in the second half
- the Defenders totaled 10 shots on-goal compared to one for Doane
- Karinna Tel tallied a match-high eight shots and put five on-goal
- Brooke Marjama (2), Jenna Roberts (1), Abi Keltner (1) and Paige Miller (1) also had shots on-goal for the Defenders
- Lydia Zylstra (7-5-2) earned the clean sheet, her fifth shutout of the season
- Zylstra was the only Dordt player to play the full 90 minutes; Batarsay left briefly in the first half but talled the next highest minutes with 87
- Tigers goalie Virginia Johnson (5-4-2) made seven saves

- Dordt improved to 23-9-1 all-time against Doane, 15-3-1 on its home field

- Keltner recorded her first career point with the assist to Tel in the 69th minute
