Baseball | Season Opening Split For Defenders

The Dordt Defender baseball team split its games against Avila (Kansas) on Friday afternoon, February 7 in Kansas City. Dordt dropped the first game 11-0 and came back with a 5-4 win in the second game.

GAME 1
Dordt allowed six runs in the first inning and mustered three this in the loss.  Dordt had two runners on in the first inning with a Jimmy Tombly single and a Drew Oreskes walk but the two were left stranded with a pair of strikeouts to end the inning.

The hosts came back with six runs on four hits and took advantage of a pair of Dordt errors in the home half of the sixth and added two each in the third and fourth and another in the sixth to take a 10-0 lead.

Carson Belcher had a pair of singles, one in the fifth and the other in the seventh to account for Dordt's other two hits.

GAME 2
A run in the top of the ninth inning broke a 4-4 tie and gave Dordt its first win of the season and Ian Eshelman his first career coaching win in a 5-4 decision.

The Eagles scored a pair of runs in the first inning on three hits but Dordt had an answer in the second as Joseph Schlesselman, Braeden Biggar and Carson Belcher all singled to start the inning and load the bases. Luke Arndorfer pushed a run in with a sacrifice fly and Logan Templeton followed with a single for another run. Caleb Beard finished the scoring with a sacrifice bunt.

Avila regained the lead with a pair of runs on a hit in the bottom of the third inning. Biggar delivered a single in the fourth to lead off the Dordt half of the inning and eventually reached third on a throwing error on a fielder's choice. With runners at first and third Carson Belcher stole second and Biggar broke for home and scored to tie the game.

Avila threatened again with two runners in the fifth inning but came up empty and the next scoring chance for the Defenders came in the top of the ninth when Biggar walked and stole second and eventually third and came across with the eventual winning run top of the seventh on a ground out.

Avila got two runners on with a walk and a hit batsman in the bottom of the ninth off reliever Drew De Vries but a fielder's choice ground out ended the game. Daniel Buteyn earned the win and De Vries the save.
