Defenders Walk-Off Game One; Split With Tigers in GPAC Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Dordt University baseball team recorded a sweep against Dakota Wesleyan in the GPAC opener for both teams played today at Drake Field in Mitchell, S.D. The Defenders earned a walk-off 5-2 win in game one and 

The teams will play games three and four of the four-game set on Friday, March 14 starting at noon in Mitchell, S.D.

Game One: 5-2 (9 innings) win | Box Score

Logan Templeton hit a walk-off, three-run home run with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead the Defenders to the come-from-behind win. 

Trailing 2-1 heading into the bottom of the ninth, Chisum Demmers led off with a walk and advanced to second on a Braeden Biggar single. Following a DWU pitching change, Jimmy Twombley drew a walk to load the bases and Carson Belcher hit an RBI groundout to score Demmers and tie the score 2-2. Templeton followed by hitting his team-leading sixth home run of the season to win it.

Ty Neugebauer (2-0), the Defenders fourth pitcher, recorded the final two outs in the top of the ninth to earn the win. Matthew Eubanks allowed two hits and one earned run over five innings and Lincoln Vander Molen pitched a scoreless sixth inning. Daniel Buteyn walked three but did not give up a hit in 2.1 innings of work.

Dordt out-hit Daktoa Wesleyan 9-3, led by Joseph Schlesselman who went 2-for-4 and scored a run. Seven other Defenders had one hit each; Twombley reached base three times with an RBI single and two walks. 

Dakota Wesleyan grabbed a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Caleb Meyers in the top of the second inning. The score remained 1-0 until the Defenders tied it in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single from Twombley. 

The Tigers went ahead again in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by Meyers, who had two of the three Tigers' hits. 

Meyers (0-1) took the loss on the mound, giving up one hit and two runs in two innings. Mitchell Sand pitched the first six innings and gave up seven hits and one earned run.

Game Two: 2-0 loss | Box Score

Mike Bruell pitched a complete-game three-hitter in the Defenders 2-0 loss to Dakota Wesleyan in game two. 

Bruell (0-2) allowed three singles, walked three in a 79-pitch effort that was a career, single-game high in innings pitched.

Scorless after two innings, Dakota Wesleyan pushed across the only two runs of the game in the top of the third inning. Kelbee Woodham led off with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, and, following a walk by Lane Darrow, both players came around to score on a two-run single from Caleb Meyers.

Dordt managed just four hits, all singles, two by Jimmy Twombly and one each for Joseph Schlesleman and Matthew McMillian. The Defenders advanced a runner to third in both the first and third innings and was retired in order in both the sixth and seventh innings.

Dakota Munger (1-2) pitched a complete-game four hitter and struck out four.
