Men's Volleyball Falls Short Against Vikings

The Defenders dropped a 3-0 decision to the No. 6 ranked Grand View Vikings in Heart of America action on Friday evening in Des Moines, Iowa. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Defenders and Vikings began the first set by trading points until a Cade Schmidt attack error gave Grand View a 4-3 lead. A Dordt 3-0 run started by a kill from Cade Schmidt gave Dordt a 6-4 lead. Both teams would trade points again until Grand View put together three unanswered points, capped off by a service ace. Dordt responded a few points later by scoring five straight and taking a 14-11 lead. Grand View then scored the next 10 out of 15 points before Dordt fought back to make it a 24-23 game. Dordt was unable to force bonus points and Andre Leandro recorded the kill and a 25-23 set one win.

Grand View found themselves with an early 4-1 lead. A 5-1 run gave the Vikings an 11-5 advantage and 6-3 Vikings' run extended the lead, 17-8 after a Ryan Griffel kill. Dordt scored the next 12 out of 18 points to give themselves a chance but Ryan Griffel secured a set two VIkings' win with a kill. 

The Vikings opened the third set with a four straight points but Dordt answered right back with three of their own after a Justin Hofman service ace. Andres Guzman evened it up at five with a kill but a Defender service error and a Ryan Griffel kill gave Grand View a 7-5 lead. Both teams would trade points but three straight points gave Grand View a 13-8 lead. The Vikings began to pull away, going on a 5-0 run to take a 21-12 lead. Dordt would string together three straight points but were unable make the comeback as they dropped the final set, 25-19.

Dordt is now 11-8 overall and 5-7 in conference play. They will face No. 15 William Penn on Saturday at 11 am.
