The Dordt University men's soccer team earned a hard-fought 1-1 draw against the University of Saint Mary (Kan.) on Saturday afternoon at Charles Berkel Stadium.
Saint Mary (2-2) opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Jude Rodwell capitalized on a pass from Rylan Nowak to give the Spires an early lead. Dordt responded in the 26th minute as senior defender
Pedro Menezes netted the equalizer off a well-placed corner from
Anton Forsch, leveling the match at 1-1.
Both teams had opportunities to break the tie, with Saint Mary holding a slight edge in shots (10-9). Dordt goalkeeper
Shad Jaeger recorded three saves, including two in the first half, while Saint Mary's Ricardo Perez also tallied three saves in his 45 minutes of action.
The second half featured a physical battle, with five yellow cards issued and a combined 27 fouls. Dordt earned four corner kicks and nearly found the go-ahead goal in the 84th minute when Perez turned Forsch's shot away.
Menezes led the Defenders with one goal on one shot, while Forsch contributed an assist and two shots, one on frame.
Pablo Martin Domingo and
Tyson Reitsma also added shots on goal.
Dordt moves to
2-1-2 on the season.
