HOW IT HAPPENED
The Defenders opened with purpose, stringing together a 7–0 burst before Midland recorded its first points. Gracie Schoonhoven got Dordt on the board less than a minute into action, finishing a layup off a feed from Macy Sievers. Moments later, Sievers knocked down a three in transition, and Schoonhoven added a jumper at the 8:20 mark to cap the opening run.
After Midland trimmed the gap to 7–3, Dordt responded immediately with a 10–1 stretch to break the game open. Schoonhoven powered through the lane for two more baskets, Willow Bleeker scored in transition off a steal, and Dordt continued to generate clean looks through strong ball movement. By the time Schoonhoven hit another jumper at 4:34, the Defenders held a 17–4 lead and full control of the game's tempo.
Dordt wasn't finished there. The Defenders closed the first quarter on a 12–2 run, highlighted by an Olivia Harazin jumper at 1:58 and two more paint scores from Schoonhoven—part of her 16-point opening quarter. Dordt led 28–12 after one, shooting 50 percent while forcing six Midland turnovers in the frame.
The momentum carried into the second. A Sievers three at the 7:27 mark kick-started another push, and the junior guard followed with a layup and free throw on the next possession to stretch the lead to 38–16. Later in the quarter, Aubrey Burkhart connected on a corner three to push Dordt past the 40-point mark. Sievers and Schoonhoven continued to steer the offense, and Dordt entered halftime ahead 57–31 after shooting 64.3 percent in the period.
Dordt's balance showed throughout the second half as the Defenders maintained complete command. Desta Hoogendoorn controlled the interior with offensive rebounds and free throws, while Bleeker and Burkhart added timely scoring. The Defenders grew the lead to as many as 44 late in the fourth and held Midland to 34.6 percent shooting for the game.
Schoonhoven led all scorers with 26 points on 11-of-12 shooting while adding seven rebounds and two steals. Sievers stuffed the stat sheet with 22 points, 10 assists, nine rebounds, and three steals, narrowly missing a triple-double. Burkhart and Hoogendoorn each added 10 points, and Bleeker and Harazin chipped in seven apiece.
Dordt dominated the glass 52–32 and turned 19 Midland turnovers into 30 points. The Defenders also outscored the Warriors 40–12 in the paint and produced 23 second-chance points.
