Travis Hits Qualifying Mark; Defenders Win Four Events at BVU

The Dordt University women's track and field team won four events at the Dennis Young Invite today, a meet hosted by Buena Vista University that took place at the Lamberti Recreation Center in Storm Lake, Iowa. 

Notes

  • Fran Travis led the Defender throwers with two personal bests, including a shot put mark that hit an NAIA Qualifying standard
    • Travis won the shot put with a personal best and NAIA Qualifying toss of 13.54m / 44-05.25
    • Travis's mark currently ranks second in the GPAC, trailing Delaney Burge (Doane), and is No.9 in the NAIA
    • Travis ranks second all-time at Dordt in the shot put, behind Tereasa Van Zee (44'11" - 1994)
    • the sophomore achieved her best throw on her first attempt of the finals
  • Travis, along with Makenna Walhof and Lynne Tormoehlen, gave the Defenders three top five showings in the weight throw
    • Travis led the group with a second place finish and a personal-best mark of 16.27m / 53-04.5
    • Walhof (3rd - 16.13m) and Tormoehlen (5th - 14.27m) were also in the top five
  • Karly Champness was the other Defender winner in the field events, taking first in the pole vault (2.85m / 9-04.25)
  • Sophie Memmelaar earned a win in the longest race of the day, taking first in the 3000m with a personal-best time of 11:34
    • Memmelaar bettered her previous best by nearly 18 seconds
  • Dordt finished 1-2 in the final event, the 4x400 relay
  • Kailee Altena led the Defenders sprint crew with a pair of top five showings
    • Altena ran a personal-best time and placed third overall in a stacked 200m field
    • Altena's time of 25.94 is No.5 all-time at Dordt
    • the junior also placed second in the 60m with a time of 8.14
