Distance Medley Wins; Qualifies For Nationals With No.1 Time in NAIA

Day one is complete at the Mark Schuck Open and the Dordt University women's track and field team qualified another event for the NAIA Indoor National Championships to highlight the Defenders performances. The Mark Schuck Open is held at the Myers Field House on the campus of Minnesota State in Mankato, Minn. Notes:
  • the Defenders cruised to the title in the distance medley, crossing the finish line with the No.1 time in the NAIA by nearly 15 seconds
    • the team of Addi Liston, Shelby Buwalda, Arielle DeYoung and Corinne Braun finished with a time of 12:10.95, followed by Morningside at 12:25.01
    • the Defenders time ranks fourth fastest in program history
      • No.1 - 2015: 11:55 (Douma, Velgersdyk, Byl, Slater)
      • No.2 - 2014: 12:08 (Visscher, Wilgenburg, Van Zee, De Vries)
      • No.3 - 2018: 12:08.37 (Slater, Wnek, Stephens, De Schiffart)
    • Liston put the Defenders in second place by the end of her opening carry (1200m)
    • Buwalda gave Dordt the lead for good after her first lap of the 400m
    • DeYoung (800m) and Braun (Mile) continued to push and increase their lead over the final two legs
  • two Defenders, Joy Koole and Jeni Burtis, finished in the top 10 in the 3000m
    • Koole placed fourth overall with a time of 10:11.39, currently the No.2 time in the GPAC (behind Courtney Sporrer of Morningside)
    • Koole's time ranks No.2 all-time at Dordt, trailing only Jessica Kampman (9:54)
    • Burtis placed 10th overall with a personal-best time of 10:27
  • 11 Dordt runners competed in the 3000m and two additional Defenders, Hannah Thong (13th) and Macy Marshall (16th) placed in the top 20
  • Jenny Lumkes recorded a personal-best total of 2,798 points and was the top NAIA finisher in the pentathlon
    • the sophomore finished 13th overall and bettered her previous best (2,736pts at Mount Marty this season) by 62 points
    • Lumkes moved up to No.4 all-time at Dordt in the pentathlon
      • No.1 - 2012: Briana Vander Woude - 3,789pts
      • No.2 - 2019: Joscelyn Wind - 3,203pts
      • No.3 - 2018: Dani Wubben - 2,957pts
    • Lumkes had a personal-best in both the 60m hurdles (10.05) and long jump (5.10m) along with a season-best in the 800m (2:40)
  • Tabitha Buwalda finished 21st (2,424pts) while competing in her first ever pentathlon
    • Buwalda ranks No.9 all-time at Dordt in the pentathlon
    • the freshman ran a personal-best in the 60m hurdles and tallied a personal-best mark in the long jump
