The Dordt University Defender hockey team advanced to the semifinals of the MACHA Tournament with a 6-1 win over Olivet Nazarene University on Friday afternoon, February 20 in Maryville, Missouri.
The Defenders opened the scoring with two goals by
Mason Carrels.
Levi Loken and
Reuben Horneman assisted on the first goal, and Horneman recorded the lone assist on Carrels' second score.
Andrew Benson added a goal later in the period, assisted by Horneman, before Horneman found the net himself to close the first-period scoring on assists from
Zach Espenson and
Rylan Veenstra.
Both teams were scoreless in the second period. Dordt put the game out of reach in the third with two unanswered goals by
Tegan Doelman and
Tristan Schlechter to build a 6-0 lead. Olivet Nazarene avoided the shutout with a late goal after the outcome was no longer in doubt.
Dordt finished with a 60-20 shots advantage in the first-ever meeting between the teams.
Dordt will face Arkansas in the semifinal round on Saturday, February 21 at 5:20 p.m. Arkansas advanced with a 7-2 win over Illinois State in the quarterfinal round.
