Men's Volleyball | Defenders Push #4 Mount Mercy

Box Score (PDF)

The opening set featured multiple momentum swings, with Dordt using an early 4-0 push to build a 13-9 lead. Joel Van Groningen fueled that stretch with consecutive kills, and the Defenders added points off Mount Mercy errors to create separation. Mount Mercy answered with a mid-set run to tie the score at 18-18 and eventually took a 22-21 lead. Dordt responded again, scoring three of the next four points—including a Cade Schmidt ace and a Van Groningen termination—to reclaim a 24-23 edge. However, the Mustangs closed the set with a decisive 3-0 run, capitalizing on two late kills to steal the 26-24 win.

Set two followed a similar pattern with Dordt generating key runs but unable to sustain the margin late. Trailing 6-4, the Defenders scored four of the next five points behind a Van Groningen ace and a pair of kills to take an 8-7 lead. Dordt later extended the advantage to 15-13 with contributions from Cory Kuperus and Van Groningen in transition. After Mount Mercy tied the set at 16-16, the teams traded points until 20-20. The Mustangs then seized control with a 3-0 run, aided by a pair of service aces, forcing Dordt to chase late. Dordt closed within 24-22 on a Van Groningen kill, but Mount Mercy finished the set on the next rally.

The third set was Dordt's best opportunity to extend the match, as the Defenders again built momentum through a mid-set surge. After falling behind 6-4, Dordt used a 5-2 run to take a 9-8 lead, with Cade Schmidt and Lance Vermeer contributing kills and the Defenders benefiting from Mount Mercy errors. Dordt later turned a 15-15 tie into an 18-16 advantage, sparked by a Van Groningen ace and consecutive kills in system. The Mustangs answered immediately with a 4-1 run to move ahead 20-19. Dordt regained the lead at 21-20 with back-to-back points, but Mount Mercy delivered the final push, closing the match on a 5-2 run. Dordt fought off one match point with a Schmidt kill, but the Mustangs secured the final point to complete the sweep.
