The Dordt Defenders were limited to three hits and trailed early in a 5-1 loss to Huntington (Indiana) on Wednesday afternoon in Melbourne, Florida.

Huntington capitalized on early opportunities in the first inning. After an error and a stolen base put runners in scoring position, Maddie Goheen delivered a two-run single down the right field line for a 2-0 lead. The Foresters added another run later in the inning when Kailee Bishop reached on an error, allowing Goheen to score for a 3-0 advantage.
Huntington extended the lead to 4-0 in the second inning with three consecutive singles, the final one by Jess Duvall driving in Carli Tharp. The Foresters pushed the margin to 5-0 in the fourth as Tharp walked, moved up on a sacrifice bunt and eventually scored on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Khloee Gregory.
Dordt had limited chances against Huntington pitcher Kinzie Mollenkopf, who struck out eight and scattered three hits over seven innings. The Defenders' best early opportunity came in the fifth inning when
Taylor Schneider singled and
Peyton Whipple walked, but Huntington escaped the frame.
Rylee Yager tripled to left field with one out in the sixth to put Dordt in scoring position, but the Defenders were unable to bring her home.
Dordt broke through in the seventh when
Sumaya Edwards led off the inning with a solo home run to account for the final 5-1 margin.
Yager went the distance in the circle for Dordt, allowing seven hits and five runs while striking out seven.
