Defenders Take Home All-American Honors in Seven Events on Final Day of NAIA Indoor Championships

The Dordt University women's track and field team totaled seven All-American performances on the third and final day of the NAIA Indoor National Championships. The 2026 championship event was held at the Alachua County Sports and Events Center in Gainesville, Fla.  The Defenders concluded the three-day championship in 13th place with 22 points and a school-record nine All-American performances (2 on Friday, 4x800 relay and Makenna Walhof in the Weight Throw). Dordt had the most events earn All-American honors, one more than Marian (Ind.) who won the national title with 51 points. The Defenders 13th place finish is their best since the 2021 season (5th) and fourth best all-time at the indoor championship.

Fran Travis was the first Defender to earn All-American honors with her eighth place finish in the shot put. Travis, seeded 12th in the field of 20, earned the ninth and final spot into the finals with a 13.33m toss on her second attempt in the prelims. The sophomore bettered her mark to 13.64m on her second attempt in the finals and passed Oliviyah Thornton (Dakota State) to place eighth overall. Travis is the first Defender to claim the national honor in the shot put (indoor) since Tereasa Van Zee did so in back-to-back years (1994-95). This is the first All-American finish for Travis.

Addy Crow was the next Defender to claim the national honor with a seventh place finish in the mile. Seeded eighth overall and a day after placing eighth in the prelims, Crow bettered her standing by one place with a school-record time of 4:54.31. The sophomore's time broke the old record (4:57.75) held by Defenders teammate Corinne Braun (2025). This is the first All-American finish by Crow in the indoor season and second overall (Steeplechase, 2025 outdoor).

Shelby Buwalda finished sixth and earned All-American honors for the third time in the 600m. Buwalda, running in her fourth race at the championship, crossed the finish line in 1:32.83, less than two seconds in back of the champion and No.1 seed, Alexandrea Clarke (St.Xavier). The senior placed eighth at last year's championship and matched her finish from the 2024 championship.

Corinne Braun repeats as an All-American in the 1000m by placing eighth in the race this afternoon. Competing in her fourth race of the championship after running the anchor leg of the Defenders All-American 4x800 relay in both prelims and finals, Braun finished the 1K in 2:58.35. The sophomore placed third in 2025 and is a four-time All-American (indoor and outdoor).

Joy Koole led a group of three Defender runners in the 3000m field and earned All-American honors for the first time. Koole placed fifth overall among the 20-runner field with a personal-best time of 9:55.72, just off the school record time held by Jessica Kampman 9:54.31 in 2024). Jeni Burtis and Hannah Thong finished 14th and 15th, respectively, and both ran personal best times. Burtis finished with a 10:19, eight seconds faster than her previous best and third fastest all-time at Dordt. Thong's time today (10:21.45) bettered her previous best by two seconds and ranks No.4 all-time at Dordt.

The Defenders distance medley team of Addi Liston, Ayda Den Herder, Arielle DeYoung and Addy Crow finished eighth and earned All-American honors. This is the first time Dordt earned the national honor in the medley since the 2021 season and the fourth time in program history. The Defenders time of 12:00.56 was just over a second faster than their prelim time and ranks No.2 all-time, just behind the 2015 team (11:55) of Erika Douma, Miranda Velgersdyk, Kayla Byl and Nicole Slater.

Dordt earned its seventh and final All-American finish in the last event of the championship, placing seventh in the 4x400 relay. The Defenders team of Anna Heynen, Kaitlyn Wercinski, Ada Dekkers and Shelby Buwalda posted a time of 3:48.32 and added two points to the team total. This is the first time a Defenders team finished among the top eight and earned All-American in the 4x400 relay since 2022.
