4x400 Relay, Throwers Headline Day Two Performances at Drake Relays

The Dordt University women's track and field team completed day two at the Drake Relays with a pair of top 10 finishes in the discus and strong performances in several relays. The three-day event is being held on the Blue Oval at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa. 

Notes:

  • Fran Travis and Makenna Walhof qualified for finals and finished seventh and eighth overall in the discus
    • both Defenders were the top NAIA finishers in the field
    • Travis's best attempt was on her second in the prelims, recording a mark of 45.08m; the sophomore had a mark of 45.06m in her second attempt of the finals
    • Walhof's best mark was on her third and final attempt of the prelims (44.41m)
    • Hadlley Lucas (Wisconsin) won the event with a mark of 49.35m / 161-11
  • the Defenders 4x400 relay advanced to Saturday's final with the sixth fastest time in today's prelim
    • running in the incredibly fast, initial heat, Dordt passed through the finish line with a season-best time of 3:46.14 and in fourth place, behind Bethel (Minn.), Lincoln (Mo.) and Olivet Nazarene (Ill.)
    • the time ranks No.2 all-time at Dordt
    • the time also easily hit the 'A' standard, doing so by nearly three seconds
    • Dordt currently has the fifth best time in the NAIA
    • relay members: Anna Heynen, Kaitlyn Wercinski, Ada Dekkers, Shelby Buwalda
    • Bethel, from the first heat, had the No.1 time in today's prelim (3:44.97)
    • Satuday's final is at 4:19pm
  • the Defenders set the program record in the 4x200 relay, their final race on day two
    • the team of Anna Heynen, Ada Dekkers, Kailee Altena and Jenna Balt finished 11th with a time of 1:41.24
    • the quartet broke the previous record (1:42.96) set last year at Drake
    • the Defenders were the fastest NAIA team in the field
    • they placed second in their heat behind Western Illinois
    • University of Nebraska won the event with a time of 1:34
  • the Defenders 4x100 relay finished fifth in their heat, 17th overall, in the prelims this morning
    • the team of Anna Heynen, Ada Dekkers, Kailee Altena and Allie Houser came across the finish line in 48.25, their second fastest time this season and sixth fastest time in program history
    • they were the fourth fastest NAIA team in the field
    • Minnesota State ran the fastest time in the prelims (46.54), just ahead of Iowa Western Community College
  • Dordt's sprint medley finished fourth of 14 teams and was the top NAIA team in the field
    • the Defenders placed third in their heat with a time of 4:07.26, trailing both Loras and Minnesota State
    • Loras won the championship with a time of 4:01.33
    • the Defenders time ranks sixth best in program history
    • Defender team members include Jenna Balt, Leah Klock, Kailee Altena and Arielle DeYoung
