The Dordt Defender volleyball team started the season with a pair of sweeps at the NAIA Volleyball Classic in Noth Sioux City, South Dakota on Friday, August 21. The Defenders earned took wins from Valley City State and Bismarck State.

The Dordt Defenders opened the season with a 3-0 win over Valley City State at 10am.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The opening set featured eight ties and five lead changes. Neither team led by more than two points until Dordt scored three straight for a 16-12 advantage. Valley City State answered and tied the set at 17-17, prompting a Dordt timeout.
Ellie Weg ended the Vikings' run with a kill and Dordt scored six consecutive points.
Laney Wolfswinkel added a kill,
Haley Wielenga served two aces and Weg had a block during the decisive run for a 23-17 lead. Valley City State fought off four set points before a service error ended the set, 25-22.
Dordt never trailed in the second set and scored five of the first six points. Kills by
Haley Kuperus and Weg helped the Defenders build an 8-2 advantage. Valley City State cut an eight-point deficit to 14-12, but
Scarlett Winterfeld stopped the run with a kill. Weg followed with a block and
Carlee Jackson served three consecutive aces as Dordt scored five straight for a 19-12 lead. Kills by Wolfswinkel and
Breanna Beckering helped the Defenders close the 25-15 win.
Valley City State scored the first two points of set three before Dordt pulled even at 3-3 on a
Kylie Beckering ace. Kuperus gave Dordt its first lead with a kill, and the teams were tied again at 4-4. Leading 8-6, Dordt scored five straight points, getting three blocks, a Wielenga kill and a Valley City State setting error to take control at 13-6.
Chloe Huisman later served back-to-back aces for a 16-7 advantage. The Vikings cut the margin to 23-21, but Kuperus delivered consecutive kills to finish the match.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Dordt had a 40-21 advantage in kills and hit .208 while limiting Valley City State to .071.
- The Defenders totaled 14 service aces, seven blocks and 41 digs.
- Kuperus and Wolfswinkel shared match-high honors with 10 kills each. Kuperus also had two block assists.
- Weg put down six kills with a .417 attack percentage and totaled three solo blocks and three block assists.

The Dordt Defenders completed the opening match with a sweep of Bismarck State late in the day Friday.

Dordt never trailed in the opening set and scored the first two points on a

Jaida Barrow kill. The Defenders extended the lead to 6-1 before Bismarck State closed to within 7-5. Dordt responded with four straight points, including kills by

Ellie Weg and Beckering. Leading 16-9, Dordt put together another four-point run behind two Huisman aces and a

Dordt raced to a 6-1 lead in set two and stretched the margin to 12-5 with four straight points on
Maddy Jackson's serve. Bismarck State later scored six consecutive points to trim a 16-7 Dordt lead to 16-13. Kuperus stopped the run with a kill and
Kylie Beckering followed with an ace. Dordt scored five straight in all, with Kuperus adding another kill to push the lead to 21-13.
Ada Dekkers delivered a late kill and teamed with
Breanna Beckering for a block before Wielenga closed the set with an ace.
The third set included five ties and three lead changes. Bismarck State led 1-0 and later erased a 6-2 Dordt advantage to tie the score at 6-6. The Mystics moved in front at 8-7, but
Breanna Beckering responded with a kill and Dordt regained the lead on a Bismarck State attack error. Beckering added another kill for a 10-8 advantage. With Dordt leading 10-9, Dekkers and Wolfswinkel recorded kills and Jackson served an ace during a four-point run. Bismarck State made a late push and cut the margin to 21-18, but Dekkers stopped the run with a kill. Wolfswinkel recorded Dordt's final two kills, including match point.
