The Dordt Defender football team overcame a slow start to turn away the Mount Marty Lancers on Friday night in Yankton, South Dakota 44-29.
Dordt surrendered a 64 yard drive and a field goal to start the game, turned the ball over on their next possession and trailed 9-0 after the Lancers scored a touchdown with 5:02 left in the first quarter. Dordt regained its composure on the ensuing drive with
Anthony Trojahn getting in from one yard out to cut the lead to 9-7 and then Dordt grabbed momentum the Mount Marty kick returner failed to get to the football in the end zone after touching it at the five yard line.Â
Chase Tompkins picked it up and Dordt had a 14-9 lead after the
Fulton Gunderson point after.
Dordt capitalized on another special teams miscue when
Tyler Wieringa blocked the Mount Marty punt on the next drive and the Defenders engineered a 10 yard drive to take a 21-9 lead. After a Lancer touchdown
Nick Wellen capped a 58 yard drive with 2:15 left in the half and the Defenders blocked a field goal to end the half and led 28-16 at the break.

Trojahn scored his second touchdown of the game on an eight yard run that put Dordt up 35-16 early in the second half but Mount Marty scored on back to back possessions to trim the difference to 35-29.

- Mount Marty had a 409-353 yards gained advantage and ran 89 plays from scrimmage.

- Abe Stoesz had 10 solo and three assisted tackles with a sack and a half and 3.5 tackles for loss.
- Colton Vander Berg had seven solo and two assisted tackles with 4.5 sacks.
- Daniel Jungling Bryce Christian each had seven solo tackles and Lucas Huttinga had four solo and five assisted tackles.
- Dordt recorded nine sacks.
