Defenders Open Season With Rated Foes

Dordt will travel to California to play in a classic hosted by Hope International on Friday and Saturday, August 26 and 27. All times listed are Central Time Zone.

THE DEFENDERS

Dordt posted a 19-10 record last season, finished 9-7 in the GPAC and finished the season at the NAIA National Championship final site in Sioux City, Iowa, where the Defenders went 1-1 in pool play.   Dordt was one of seven GPAC teams to make the final site last season and all seven won at least one match in pool play.

2021 Season Stats  

NEW FACE

Jacki Smith embarks on her first season as the Defenders' head coach.  Smith previously coached at Carleton (Minnesota) and Lancaster Bible College (Pennsylvania).  She was also an assistant coach at the University of Northwestern-St. Paul in 2015 and 2016.

NEXT

Dordt is scheduled to face Rocky Mountain (Montana), Dakota State (South Dakota), Saint Francis (Indiana) and Park (Missouri) on Friday and Saturday, September 2 and 3 in North Sioux City, South Dakota.  The Defenders will open the GPAC season on Wednesday, September 7 at home against Dakota Wesleyan.

THE FOES

NORTHWEST
The Eagles are 2-2 this season and both of their losses were in five sets to Viterbo and Rocky Mountain. The Cascade Collegiate Conference member finished 2021 with a 12-10 league mark and a 13-15 overall record.

2022 Northwest Season Stats

WESTMONT
The Warriors put together a 20-11 season last year and haven't played yet this season.   Westmont advanced to the NAIA National Championship Opening Round where its season ended in a loss to Oregon Tech.

CORBAN
Corban is 3-1 this season after taking three from Bellevue, Montana Western and Saint Katherine and losing a five-set match to Southwest Assembly of God.  Last year's Corban team was 30-3 and advanced to the NAIA National Championship quarterfinal round before being eliminated.

VANGUARD
The Lions are 2-2 this season with wins over Viterbo and Providence and losses to Carroll and Montana Tech.  Last year's Vanguard team was 13-11 overall and finished conference play in the Golden State Athletic Conference with an 8-10 mark.

2022 Vanguard Season Stats

HISTORY

Northwest
  • Dordt owns the only decision in the meeting of these two teams and that happened in 2017 in pool play at the NAIA National Championship. Dordt was a 25-11, 25-17, 25-19 winner with Ema Altena recording 12 kills and Ally Krommendyk had 10 while Jamie Gesink lofted 40 assists.
Westmont
  • Dordt leads the series with Westmont 2-1 with two of those meetings happening in 2017. In 2017 the Defenders dropped an early season meeting but came back to forge a 3-0 win at the NAIA National Championship in the quarterfinal round. Leah Kamp recorded 18 kills in that win and Gesink put up 37 assists and Summer Jansen was good for 17 digs.
Corban
  • Dordt is 5-1 against Corban with the most recent matches played in 2019.  That season Dordt won a 3-1 decision on August 22 with Corrina Timmermans and Jessi De Jager putting away 16 and 11 kills each. Megan Raszler put up 25 assists in the win.  One day later Corban bounced back with a 3-0 win as Jessi De Jager and Jori Bronner had eight and seven kills and Raszler had 20 assists.
Vanguard
  • Dordt and Vanguard have split their two meetings with the most recent decision coming in 2017 when Vanguard beat Dordt 3-0 by set scores of 25-19, 25-23, 25-17. Ema Altena had eight kills and Julia Lindbergh six while Jamie Gesink put up 20 assists.
