Emilee Heynen and
Jessica Kampman won GPAC titles and the Dordt University women's track and field team finished third at today's GPAC Indoor Championships held at the Walz Fieldhouse on the campus of Concordia University in Seward, Neb.
Dordt finished third among the 12 teams competing with 103 points, six in back of second place Doane and 5.5 better than Hastings. The Defenders have finished third in each of the last four years and within the top five 13 consecutive seasons (since 2011). Concordia totaled 241.5 points and won the championship for the eighth consecutive season.
The Defenders won two individual conference championships on the day, beginning with Heynen, who defended her title in the 800m. The sophomore led nearly from start to finish and turned in a time of 2:17.8, three seconds in front of the second place runner (Jenna Esch from Concordia).
Kampman delivered the second GPAC title for the Defenders with a win in the final individual race, the 3000m. Kampman crossed the finish line in 10:29.39, 23 seconds in front of a pair of Defender teammates,
Kristine Honomichl and
Taylor Anema, who placed second and third, respectively.
Defender athletes took home all-conference honors in 18 entries, 16 individual and two relays.
